In a healthy marriage, both partners commit to the other person’s happiness and success. That means putting in the effort to make your partner happy and comfortable in the relationship (and vice versa). A healthy sexual relationship in marriage is one way to do this.
Having sex with your spouse can help you reconnect with them physically and emotionally. Healthy sex life can remind you why you chose them to accompany you on this journey called life in the first place!
There is no set answer to this question. The frequency of sexual intimacy depends on the couple, the relationship, and various other factors.
However, there are some statistics we can look at to get an idea of what’s normal for couples in North America.
According to a survey conducted by the Kinsey Institute, sex in healthy relationships involves married couples having sex once a week. However, those couples also reported being happy with their sex life on average.
Those who had sex between once a month and once every three months (a relatively low number) were significantly less satisfied than those who had it more often or not at all.
Another study found that women who had sex more often than once per week had lower levels of depression than those who didn’t have sex at all or only infrequently. This may be because sexual activity releases endorphins into the bloodstream and helps us relax, reducing stress and depression symptoms.
Age is another factor to consider; older couples tend to have less sex than younger couples. As we age, many activities take more energy than they used to and are harder to pursue–and sex is an especially vigorous activity. Also, if one partner has health problems that make having sex painful or challenging, this could lower the frequency.
Lastly, culture matters! Some cultures frown upon sex and encourage it for procreation only in marriage. In those cultures, people who marry later in life will probably have less sexual activity than those who marry earlier.
